Invisalign allows orthodontists to make teeth straight with the use of clear plastic trays. Invisible braces and clear aligner therapy have changed the field of orthodontics forever. There are many benefits of Invisalign including improved hygiene, comfort and esthetics.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Each set of your clear trays should be worn full time for two weeks at a time. Invisalign trays should be removed when you eat and drink and while brushing, but should otherwise remain in the mouth. Slowly your teeth will shift with the small changes that exist between each computer designed tray. Treatment time can vary greatly depending on patient compliance and the extent of the type of movement that is required to finish orthodontic therapy.
The most obvious benefit of Invisalign is that the aligners are clear and not as visible as traditional braces. In fact, many people will not be aware that a person is undergoing orthodontic treatment with clear aligners without looking closely. For this reason, Invisalign is preferred by many adult patients and people that prefer a more discrete treatment option.
Not only are aligners clear, they also can be taken in and out of the mouth. This keeps the mouths of our patients clean and healthy throughout therapy. In contrast to traditional braces, it is much easier to brush your teeth because the aligners are removable. Clear aligners tend to feel better and do not irritate the soft tissue of the cheeks as frequently as traditional braces.
Forecasting Treatment Outcome
Another benefit of Invisalign treatment is that you are able to see a virtual result of the end position of your teeth. This allows you to see the final outcome of your orthodontic treatment in advance.
Invisalign is an advantageous treatment option for patients with concerns regarding the higher potential for injury in sports or interference with lip posture. Patients who are actively involved in boxing, wrestling, or other high-contact sports may prefer Invisalign over traditional braces. Additionally, musicians may find an advantage with Invisalign therapy if they play the trumpet, saxophone, etc.
Limitations of Invisalign
Considering Invisalign aligners are removable, this treatment option requires more discipline on the part of the patient. The aligners must be worn at least 22+ hours per day in order to obtain the most ideal outcome. If the aligners are not worn consistently it is difficult to achieve an ideal outcome in a reasonable amount of time. Not all patients should be treated with Invisalign depending a number of circumstances.
